Defying Gravity

Here is a song that is very close to my heart. It's from the broadway musical "Wicked" and it is one of my all time favorite sing-at-the-top-of-my-lungs-when-I-feel-down songs. Wicked is the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West came to be so "wicked!" I've never seen it, but it is in the top 5 of my Things to Do in This Life list.

Defying Gravity

GLINDA
(spoken) Elphaba - why couldn't you have stayed calm for
once, instead of flying off the handle!
(sung) I hope you're happy!
I hope you're happy now
I hope you're happy how you
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you're clever!

ELPHABA
I hope you're happy
I hope you're happy, too
I hope you're proud how you
Would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition

BOTH
So though I can't imagine how
I hope you're happy right now

GLINDA
(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry:
(sung) You can still be with the Wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted:

ELPHABA
(spoken) I know:
(sung) But I don't want it -
No - I can't want it
Anymore:

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!

GLINDA
Can't I make you understand?
You're having delusions of grandeur:

ELPHABA
I'm through accepting limits
''cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
I'd sooner buy
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down:
(spoken) Glinda - come with me. Think of what we could
do: together.

(sung) Unlimited
Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team
There's ever been
Glinda -
Dreams, the way we planned 'em

GLINDA
If we work in tandem:

BOTH
There's no fight we cannot win
Just you and I
Defying gravity
With you and I
Defying gravity

ELPHABA
They'll never bring us down!
(spoken) Well? Are you coming?

GLINDA
I hope you're happy
Now that you're choosing this

ELPHABA
(spoken) You too
(sung) I hope it brings you bliss

BOTH
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend:

ELPHABA So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately:
"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who'd ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity
I'm flying high
Defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!

I am a Sexy Goddess!

Bex, an adorable sweetie over at Bex's Hexes has started a lovely campaign called "I am a Sexy Goddess." It's all about owning your sexuality, and loving your body, and being OK with others doing the same. I love it! I think it goes along wonderfully with the "Own Your Beauty" movement from Blogher. (I have a banner for this at the bottom of my posts if you are interested!) So I say to you, you are damn sexy, Goddess! I am lush and curvy, and have a lot to offer the world! You darling, are amazing and sexy too! Believe it or not, there is room in this world for women like me, and you, and all the top models to all be sexy! Hop over to my sidebar and click on the button to see what it is all about!

While you are there, Bex is having an awesome giveaway for having reached 100 followers.... which naturally I want to win! Do stop on by for she is an inspirational darling... and just damn fun to read! One of my favorite things about her is how sweet and innocent she looks on the outside... and how much depth, and dare lurks just underneath! She is brave enough to stand up and say HEY when someone offends her with the media, and she owns her sexuality right out there in the world. Bex is totally Girl Powah approved! Ok... this love fest will stop now... but do stop by at Bex's Hexes!

XOXO

PS... stop by and comment on our Facebook wall for an extra entry into the Giveaway.... ending November 2 so hurry!

October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

I have a story I want to share with you. It is my story. It wont be in this post, but it will be soon. I am gearing up to write it. I was inspired to do this by Christine over at Bliss Chick. She shared her story and it touched my heart deeply. My story is different, as each of ours are. No worse, no better. Just my own. I hope you will stop back by and read, because domestic violence is so prevalent in our society, and it is so not Girl Powah approved!
For today I am going to post a music video that I posted previously, but it was at the bottom of another post, and I want to make sure that it is seen. It's amazing and wonderful... and you will love it!

Remember, there are 15 more days to enter the giveaway! PS, watch FB for chances to get extra entries!

Don't Get Lost In the Crowd

Here is a song that I have loved for years, and has been very inspirational to me! I found it on the soundtrack to "Center Stage" which definitely qualifies as a Girl Powah movie! I highly recommend it to everyone! I can't find an official video for this song, but someone did post a CSI Miami compilation video on youtube, so I am including it so you can hear it. The lyrics follow, as I want to make sure you get all the inspiration you can!

"Don't Get Lost In The Crowd"

You are the one that keeps your dream alive
And you are the one who feels the rhythm deep inside
Do you ever wonder if you can make you fly?
But you will never know, if you don't really try

There's so many fast frames
Quick cuts and a million stars
Can make you wonder
Can make you dream
ahead from the start
When you know your heart
and follow your own destiny

Don't get lost in the crowd
Be the one to be strong and turn heads around
Even from dark to light
You are the spark
You have the fire
You are the heart
Now be a believer
Don't get lost in the crowd

Look around you
You may not be
the latest fashion or in a magazine
Or under high profiles
But you will be
a sweet inspiration
If you got your own style

There's so many fast frames
Quick cuts and a million stars
Pulling you away from what you really love
If you sing your own song
Straight from your heart
You'll find yourself rising above

Don't get lost in the crowd
Be the one to be strong and turn heads around
Even from dark to light
You have the spark
You have the fire
You are the heart
Now be a believer
Don't get lost in the crowd
'Cause we live in a world of so many choices
It's hard to find our own voices
And keep going on from day to day
So get with the earth, and get with the sky
Get with the inside

Don't get lost in the crowd
Be the one to be strong and turn heads around
Even from dark to light
You have the spark and the fire
You are the heart
Now be a believer
Don't get lost in the crowd
Be the one to be strong and turn heads around
Even from dark to light
You have the spark and the fire
You are the heart
Now be a believer
Don't get lost in the crowd
Be the one to be strong and turn heads around
Even from dark to light
You have the spark and the fire
You are the heart
Now be a believer
Don't get lost in the crowd

Lots of love!!!

Girl Powah - You Don't Own Me

One of my favorite movies of all time is First Wives Club. I find it hilarious, and the song, You Don't Own Me, has been very inspirational, and of course fun! The video today is the scene at the end of the movies where Bette, Diane, and Goldie sing...

I am not including the lyrics, because I think the message of the movie is pretty clear. I am however, including another video I found on youtube. It's an awesome parody of the same thing. I am loving the girl playing Diane, because she does a hilarious over the top interpretation of her dancing! I loves me a good parody!

Have a lovely gypsy day!

My Perfect Protest

I hope even if you don't read my posts very often that you will stop by for this one, as I am soooo touched and inspired by the idea! From a blog I have recently found and am in LOVE with, Gypsy's Girls Guide I found out about The Perfect Protest It's an amazing and encouraging way to look at the world. You don't have to be perfect to be happy... though that is what we are supposed to believe. Stop over HERE for a video about exactly what I mean (Thanks Wild Women!!!)
Well I decided to do my own perfect protest!

I have always loved short hair, not chin length bob, but a pixie cut, dangerously short. But I am a plus size woman, and have always feared that I would look ridiculous. All the advice is that you should have very full hair to offset your body, so you don’t look like a big body with a small head. Recently I needed a drastic change, but I feared that it would be imperfect…not right. The urge would not go away, so one day I went to the salon and had it chopped! I walked away so happy that I didn’t even look to see how big the pile on the floor was, since my hair was nearly down to my waist. I haven’t thought twice about it since. I protest perfection with my life. I must be happy, and just because society dictates a certain standard doesn’t mean that works for me. Society and my big butt be damned! I feel so free to be my authentic self and I’m not looking back!

Before

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd After

Did I forget to mention that I added some bright pink streaks to it? :)
They have faded now to a light pink, and I'm sure will be gone soon, but it was fun while it lasted... and the short hair is here to stay!

I encourage you to protest against perfection! It is so freeing to let go of such a structured ideal, and just live your own life your own way!

Girl Powah - What You Are is Beautiful

This is a song I recently discovered, and I am already so in love! It is by Jewel, who I have loved for years... I have all of her albums, and love to sing her stuff at karaoke! But I digress... :) I actually love two of her songs soooo very much that I am going to include them both. I am posting the video followed by the lyrics for each of them. I hope you feel as inspired as I do each time I hear them!

What You Are by Jewel from "Sweet and Wild"

I’m driving around town
Kinda bored with the windows rolled down
See a girl on the bus stop bench
Dressed to draw attention

Hoping everyone will stare
If she don’t stand out she thinks she’ll disappear
Wish I could hold her, tell her, show her
What she wants is already there

A star is a star
It doesn’t have to try to shine
Water will fall
A bird just knows how to fly

You don’t have to tell a flower how to bloom
Or light how to fill up a room
You already are what you are
And what you are is beautiful

Heard a story the other day
Took place at the local VA
A father talking to his dying son
This was his conversation

“It’s not supposed to be like this
You can’t go first I can’t handle it”
The boy said “Dad now don’t you cry,
Remember when I was a child what you used to tell me when I’d ask why?”

(You’d say) Gravity is gravity
It doesn’t try to pull you down
Stone is stone
It can’t help but hold its ground

The wind just blows, though you can’t see
It’s everywhere like I’ll always be
You already are what you are
And what you are is strong enough

Look in the mirror
Now that’s another story to tell
I give love to others
But I give myself hell

I’d have to tell myself
“In every scene there’s a perfect plan”
Everything I hoped to be
I already am

A flower is a flower
It doesn’t have to try to bloom
And light is light
Just knows how to fill a room

And dark is dark
So the stars have a place to shine
The tide goes out
So it can come back another time

Goodbye makes a love so sweet
And love is love so it can teach us
We already are what we are
And what we are is beautiful

And strong enough
And good enough
And bright enough

Stronger Woman by Jewel

I guess you could say I'm one of those girls
That's always been with one of those guys
You know the type
Like right now, he sleeps while I write
But it's better than crying
I'm worn out from trying
From loving a man who always makes it clear
I'm not welcome here
Just till he's hungry or frisky
or needs something cleaned
And you know what I mean

But not tonight
'Cause come the morning light, oh
I'm gonna love myself more than anyone else
Believe in me, even if someone can't see
The stronger woman in me

I'm going to be my own best friend
Stick with me till the end
Won't lose myself again, never, no,
'Cause there's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman in me

Light bulbs buzz,
I get up
And head to my drawer
I wish there was more
I could say
Another fairytale fades to gray
I've lived on hope
Just like a child
Walking that mile
Faking that smile
All the while
Wishing my heart had wings

Well tonight, I'm going to be
The kind of woman I'd want my daughter to be, oh

I'm gonna love myself more than anyone else
Believe in me, even if someone can't see
There's a stronger woman in me
I'm gonna be my own best friend
Stick with me till the end
I won't lose myself again, never, no
'Cause there's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman

This is me, packing up my bags
And this is me, headed for the door
And this is me, the best you ever had
I'm going to love myself
More than anyone else
Believe in me even if someone cannot see
There's a stronger woman in me
I'm going to be my own best friend
Stay with me till the end
Won't lose myself again, never, no
'Cause there's a stronger woman
A stronger woman
There's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman in me.
